Google has renamed its Bard chatbot to Gemini.

This dialogue-based AI assistant is considered smarter than ChatGPT in certain applications, and the web version is very convenient to use.

However, despite the name change, Google has not yet filed a new trademark application in Taiwan.

It is possible they will later file using the “priority claim” mechanism with the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office.

What is a Priority Claim in Trademark Applications?

If a company files a trademark in another country first, it has six months to file in other countries and claim priority based on the earlier filing.

This is often used to:

‧ Prevent trademark squatting in other countries

‧ Keep marketing or product strategy confidential from competitors

The priority claim must include:

 ‧ The filing date

 ‧ The application number

‧ The country of the first filing

Real Example: Apple and Jamaica

Apple often files trademarks in Jamaica, a country where trademark information is less publicly transparent.

This allows them to claim priority within the six-month window before competitors can detect their strategy from applications in major jurisdictions.

By the time rivals find out through other filings, six months may have already passed—too late to interfere.

Google’s Previous Naming Issue (1)

Back in 2000, a company in Germany already held rights to the GMAIL trademark.

As a result, Google could only register and operate under the name GOOGLE MAIL in Germany.

Have you protected your trademark?

If tech giants are doing it, maybe it’s time to talk strategy!
